Department of Geography, ADP College was established in 1964 under the leadership of late Prof. Debendra Saikia. Prof. Nagen Chandra Nath, Prof. Kusha Ram Saikia and Prof. Khagendra Mahela subsequently joined the department as teachers and retired. This half century old department has witnessed tremendous transformations since its birth and is gloriously standing tall amidst all the transformations and changes with unmatched history of glorious results aided by untiring effort of the teachers both at the past an present. At present the department offers both major as well as general subject to both Arts an Science graduation students. Each year our students secure very much esteemed position in the university examinations and in three instances since the establishment of the department our students have clicked the jackpot i.e., top position of the university. As such, each major seat admission in this department each year rivets tough competition among the students aspiring to take admission in the department not only from Nagaon district but also from Marigaon and Karbi Anglong districts.
The department is a lifelong institutional member of the North-East Indian Geographical Society. It regularly subscribes two peer reviewed refereed journals in Geography and a host of e-journals. The departmental library has a collection of approximately 300 books which are basically text and reference books. We have an experienced, highly qualified, sincere and dedicated faculty staff, well equipped laboratory and a digital classroom with internet facility, interactive board, and LCD projector. Our Teaching methods also include Traditional lecture method, conduction of seminar and group discussion among students. There is also an interactive board in the department. Moreover, there are sufficient quantity of models, maps and globes in the department which are frequently used by the teachers in the classes. The teachers of the department also provide the students personal level counseling and guidance not only in academic matters but also in making choice of careers related decisions. The efforts have certainly shown results in last three to four few years when 22 students from this department have cracked different competitive examinations and got different jobs.
The Department has two wall magazines published during each session. These are “Tsunami” and “Lahar”.
