Department of Assamese, ADP College was established in 1959. The UG Major course in the subject was started in 1959 and the PG course was started in the year of 2014. Now the Department is accelerating its strength having more and more students. Besides in the 56th years of its glorious existence, the department able to attracts students from all districts of Assam like Nagaon, Sonitpur, Marigaon, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong etc. The present strength of the department in Higher Secondary, Degree and Master Degree Course Classes (having Major & General Course) is around 1000. The department has a aim to assist all levels of students in acquiring a research full, conceptual understanding of the nature and basic structure of Assamese Literature, Culture and Linguistics fields, its processes and applications so that students can prepare themselves how to face new challenges in life.
The Department of Assamese has an own departmental library as well as a Digital class room (ICT) for the effective communication with the students. Now we have a collection of about 600 valuable books concerning Linguistics, Cultural and Literature field and have a few researches, Ethnic oriented magazines, which are constantly facilitating the intellectual need of the students. Another important thing for the students is that we have many Interdisciplinary faculty members as well as Guest Professors; scholars to provide them better educational experiences, Knowledge and directions. We, Department also adopted a ‘Harijon Sampradai’ Village to educated, interact and teach them to foster in neighbouring society. A Departmental Wall Magazine is published yearly by the students to measure themselves.
The Department of Assamese is enriched with five full time teachers and others from the Indoor and outdoor quality based teachers.All the faculties of the Department of Assamese are renowned in Assam from their own Quality in their respected fields and are related to the various Societies, social organisations like “PARIDHI” (social and cultural organisation of Assam). Besides the teachers of the Department of Assamese are involved in various extension works like lecture, Seminar, workshop, Poet meet, cultural exhibitions, Field work with the students like ‘Majuli’ (World smallest river Island), Sivasagar (historical place), as well as Educational workshop-programme-quiz organised by the student organisations in different districts like Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Nagaon, Kamrup (Metro), Goalpara etc. The college or department members are involved in secondary level educational institute like high schools, higher secondary schools, junior colleges in concern districts to co-operate and co-interact with them to challenge the goals. Ornament professor like Poet Jiban Narah had been invited to ‘Bangladesh poet meet’ and was awarded ‘Sabda award’ for his grand literateur works. Poet Ajit bharali also awarded ‘Homen Borguhaign Sahitya Bata’ for his exceptional literary works “Sukurbaria Bajar Aru Ananya”.
